Missourians proved something mighty important on Tues., Aug. 4th, Rural Democrats: when folks from every corner of the state - in every county - decide enough is enough, even the slickest, big‑money amendments don’t stand a chance. Amendments 4 and 5 came wrapped in fancy packaging, but rural voters saw straight through it. Missouri voters reject income tax phaseout, initiative petition changes • Missouri Independent. Neighbors talked to neighbors and people who don’t agree on much agreed on this: these amendments weren’t written for us, and we weren’t about to let someone else rewrite our constitution to suit themselves. The 30‑year Treasury yield just hit a 19‑year high, something we haven’t seen since 2007, Rural Democrats. While that might sound like something only Wall Street traders care about, it lands squarely on Missouri’s doorstep. When long‑term interest rates jump, it hits everything Missourians rely on: farm loans, mortgages, hospital financing, equipment purchases, land deals, and even credit cards: US borrowing costs hit 19-year high as Fed holds interest rates | US interest rates | The Guardian. When borrowing gets more expensive, rural communities feel it first and feel it hardest because so much of our economy depends on affordable credit.

Trump’s creepy pro‑birth crusade has officially come for teenagers, Rural Democrats. Teen pregnancy programs now have to preach traditional marriage and baby‑making instead of offering actual reproductive health. The whole thing’s been rebranded into “reproductive goals counseling,” fertility‑tracking homework, and a stern wag‑the‑finger warning about the supposed dangers of ovulation suppression. And the evidence‑based programs that actually lowered teen pregnancy rates? Canceled. Because...well...of course they were. On our social media, we posted the Missouri Promise PAC MEC reports - and they spell out one thing in big, bold letters: out‑of‑state dark money. This is the same PAC bankrolling the push for Amendment 5, and - holy cow - the reaction was instant. Self‑described Republicans jumped into the comments saying they’re voting NO, and they weren’t shy about it. They were loud, fed up, and very clear about how little faith they have in Kehoe or Amendment 5. It was one of those rare Missouri political moments where you could practically hear the record scratch.

The Supreme Court closed out its term with a week of rulings that will ripple through every corner of the country, Rural Democrats. In just a few days, the Court weighed in on presidential power, campaign finance, transgender athletes, SCOTUS Concludes Pride Month by Allowing States to Ban Trans Students From Girls’ Sports Teams and federal agency authority. But the decision with the deepest constitutional roots - and the most direct impact on families in our communities - was the Court’s reaffirmation of birthright citizenship. Amendment 1 - renewing a sales tax for state parks and soil conservation;
Amendment 2 - requiring direct election of county assessors;
Amendment 4 - changing the threshold for constitutional amendments proposed by initiative petition;
Amendment 5 - authorizing lawmakers to expand sales taxes as part of an effort to eliminate the state income tax.
